Installations - Nur Nur

In the NUR NUR installation, only fluorescent light was used. This installation took place in the old entrances of the Noorderstation in Groningen, which served as an experimental exhibition space. The title NUR NUR is a play on words that brings together the languages German, Arabic, Iranian and Hebrew. In German, "nur" means "only", while in the other languages it means "light". This pun was at the heart of the installation, which literally and figuratively revolved around "Only Light".

The inspiration was provided by the often green-colored light that can be seen in minarets and mosques in the Middle East. In addition, blue, a color that plays a prominent role in Jewish religion and culture, was used. The installation was mainly focused on the winter period, in which the Solstice, Christmas and the Jewish Hanukkah festival of lights almost coincide. December therefore became the perfect time for this installation, to emphasize and explore the human dependence on light.

Nur Nur was at its best in the twilight and darkness, from about 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The installation underlined that nothing is more essential to human survival and happiness than the light of the sun. This fundamental need for light is a recurring theme in various religions, and it is expressed in a unique and symbolic way in this installation.
